Good value, minor issue

I got an Off-Peak Ticket for a trip from Leeds to Newcastle. Booking online was easy enough, and getting the e-ticket on my phone was convenient. The price was fair for the journey, especially compared to some other operators. The train itself was clean, and the WiFi worked okay for most of the trip. My only small gripe was the onboard catering; the selection seemed a bit limited and overpriced. Overall, a decent journey, but they could improve the food options.

Saved a good bit on tickets

I needed to travel from Liverpool to Glasgow and decided to check TransPennine Express. I saw they had Advance Train Tickets which were way cheaper than buying on the day. I also used my 16-25 Railcard, which knocked off another 33%. The total saving was pretty significant, felt like good value for the long journey. The mobile ticket was easy to use, and I got a seat reservation too. For a first-timer, I was impressed with how much I saved and how simple it all was.

Always reliable for travel

I booked Advance Train Tickets from Manchester to Edinburgh again. Like always, the process was straightforward on their website. The price was consistent with what I paid last time for a similar journey. No booking fees, which is a nice touch. It's why I keep coming back for my UK train travel.

Heard about a Club 50 discount, how do you actually get that applied? Is it just for certain routes or dates?

I Ivy Reyes 1 month ago
You usually just need to select the Club 50 option when you're searching for tickets. It's for people aged 50 and over, I think it applies to most off-peak journeys.

Yep, just choose it in the passenger type dropdown. No special code needed, just gotta be 50+.

Hey, thinking of grabbing some tickets for next month. Does anyone know if there's a student discount code floating around or anything?

R Rosa 3 weeks ago
Yeah, I think they do something with UniDays or similar. Worth checking on their site for it.

They mainly focus on Railcards for discounts, like the 16-25 one. Not sure about a specific 'student discount' code, but Railcards give you a good chunk off.

Is it easy to change your ticket if plans shift? Like if I buy an advance one and then need to go a different day?

S Shane Nguyen 3 weeks ago
Advance tickets are usually pretty restrictive. You might be able to change the time on the same day for a fee, but a whole different day is tough unless it's a flexible ticket.

Nah, advance tickets are generally non-refundable and hard to change once bought. Had to just buy a new one last time my plans changed.

Trying to book a trip from Manchester to Edinburgh. How far ahead can you usually buy these advance tickets? Trying to get the cheapest deal.

M Marcus T. 1 month ago
Usually you can book them a good few months in advance. The earlier you snag them, the cheaper they tend to be. I've bought some 3 months out before.

Pretty far out, like up to 12 weeks I think. Definitely jump on them as soon as your dates are set for the best price.

Are TPE tickets on their website usually cheaper than on Trainline? Or is it all the same prices these days?

J June 1 month ago
TPE's own site definitely has no booking fees, which Trainline usually adds. So yeah, direct is often cheaper overall.

Always check direct with the train operator! Trainline adds fees sometimes. Plus, you get all the ticket types there. I usually start with TPE's site.
